Wisdom Teeth Removal
Preparing for Your Next Appointment
We expect that we will eliminate any pain and/or anxiety that could be associated your procedure. To readily accomplish this, please comply with the following instructions:
- Do not eat or drink anything for 6 hours before your appointment
- Children (12 years and younger) may have clear liquids (water, juice, soda) until 2 hours before appointment.
- Wear a short sleeve shirt so that vital signs can be taken (blood pressure, etc.).
- Brush your teeth and rinse with an antiseptic mouth rinse (Listerine) if possible just before you leave your home for appointment. This can decrease oral bacterial numbers.
- Take any usual morning medications (such as blood pressure and heart medications, asthma medication) with 6-8 oz of water the morning of your appointment. It is okay to take coumadin and daily low dose aspirin therapy unless otherwise instructed.
- Do not take larger doses of aspirin (more than one (1) per day) for 10 days before your appointment.
- It is okay to take Tylenol, Advil, Aleve, Motrin and Ibuprofen type pain relievers in the days and hours before your appointment.
- Diabetics who take oral medication for diabetes, Do Not Take that medication the morning of your surgery.
- Diabetics who take insulin:
- Try to schedule your appointment early in the morning.
- Well-controlled diabetic patients may not need to alter your usual AM dose.
- Decreasing your AM insulin dose may be necessary to achieve a blood sugar of 120-180 mg/dl. Mildly elevated blood sugar is more desirable than lower blood sugar for your appointment.
- Asthma patients or those who have asthmatic tendencies: Use your inhaler medication before your appointment and bring the inhaler with you to the office.
